For medical technology developer Lucid Innovation, proximity to frontline clinical expertise has been a catalyst for life-saving breakthroughs. At Enterprise House within Manchester Science Park (MSP), Lucid is uniquely positioned to co-create directly with specialist surgeons from the Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT).

This powerful collaborative campus environment enables their team to seamlessly iterate on vital surgical instruments—such as an innovative new valve designed to reduce blood loss during keyhole surgeries and drastically accelerate patient recovery times. Immersing their operations within our thriving health tech ecosystem has actively accelerated the journey from concept to critical clinical practice.

Manchester Infirmary is part of the Manchester Foundation Trust, which is now the largest trust in the country. What I mainly do is fix aneurysms, which is a swelling, dilation, or weakening of the arteries. I specialise in fixing these aneurysms using keyhole techniques.

Lucid Innovation develops medical, scientific, and wellness products. Lucid is currently working with members of the surgical team on the innovation of a valve which could accelerate surgeries and reduce blood loss. Sorting out this problem to have a large tube through which we can put multiple instruments without having any major, uh, so to say, blood loss—if it works—could help patients get out of hospital faster, which is a key priority. Enabling quicker recovery times is essential.

Now, the great thing about having such a campus is that it brings everyone together so you can get the views of everybody. And MFT also benefits from developments and production, which can come out quicker and can be brought to clinical practice sort of earlier because of the joint collaboration.

You know, the proximity and the access to knowledge and skills and experience is just invaluable. It's what we need, and because we're so close, we can get that knowledge every day early in project objectives, which makes it more effective and efficient for us to deliver.
