The Cornwall Buildings lie within the Colmore Row conservation area and were built in 1898 for the Birmingham Hospital Saturday Fund. The Saturday Fund was an organisation who raised money for local hospitals and particularly sought to do so by encouraging hospital staff to work one unpaid Saturday per year. Whilst the building and many within the conservation area are Victorian-era Newhall Street itself has a reputation within 20th century history as the home to several telephone exchanges including the subterranean Anchor Exchange - a series of secure underground tunnels built during the Cold War. The Victorian terracotta and brick Grade II-listed building has undergone a simple and stylish refurbishment, contemporary furnishings sit alongside unique period features such as original fireplaces and the the interior is vibrant and filled with light.
