Manchester Science Park Customer Story: Lucid
By Bruntwood SciTech

Lucid is an award-winning design, innovation, regulatory and manufacturing partner for organisations involved in healthcare and medical technology. Based at Manchester Science Park, a Bruntwood SciTech campus on the Oxford Road Corridor, Lucid works closely with clinicians, researchers and patients to create and make pioneering digital and physical medical devices that change lives.
By choosing workspace in a thriving innovation cluster, Lucid has been able to move faster - cutting development cycles, tapping into specialist facilities, and collaborating with partners such as Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). It’s a clear example of place-based innovation in action, showing how the right environment can turn ideas into results.
Designing technology that changes lives
Bringing new medical devices to market is a demanding process. Products need to be developed with precision, tested rigorously, and proven safe in clinical settings.
Lucid set out to bridge this challenge. Their approach combines human-centred design with advanced engineering. Accreditation to the international medical device standard ISO 13485 for design and manufacturing ensures devices not only meet technical and regulatory standards but also improve patient experience and outcomes.
To do this, they needed a base that connected them to research partners, healthcare institutions and a wider community of innovators.
Thriving at Manchester Science Park
Relocating to Manchester Science Park put Lucid at the heart of the Oxford Road Corridor - one of Europe’s leading innovation clusters. The campus brings together two major universities, NHS trusts and hundreds of science and tech businesses.
For Lucid, the benefits were immediate:
Proximity to the NHS: working alongside MFT meant the team co-develop devices with patients, clinicians and carers, benefitting from fast, meaningful feedback.
Specialist facilities: Bespoke workshops with prototyping equipment and flexible office space allowed rapid iteration.
A vibrant community: being surrounded by like-minded businesses opened doors to collaborations and knowledge sharing.
This combination allows Lucid to move from opportunity to sketch ideas, 3D models and digital mock-ups to clinical testing at pace, without regulatory and market confidence.
Delivering breakthrough devices
Since joining the campus, Lucid has delivered a series of standout projects that show the value of being part of an innovation cluster:
Medical device design for neurology: partnering with QV Bioelectronics, Lucid designed and prototyped neural stimulation devices. This mix of engineering skill and clinical insight helped secure funding for further development.
Collaborations with academic partners: introduced by the University of Manchester Innovation Factory, Lucid has developed and manufactured opportunities spotted by clinical academics including Anisys GO (TM), a ground-breaking assessment and therapy system for anorectal dysfunction.
Scaling through investment: being based in a recognised cluster has given Lucid greater credibility with investors, helping the company attract funding and grow its team.
These successes have boosted Lucid’s growth while also strengthening Manchester’s reputation as a UK hub for medtech innovation.
The power of place-based innovation
Lucid’s journey shows just how important location can be. By embedding themselves in the Oxford Road Corridor, they benefit daily from close ties to talent, research, investors and healthcare partners.
“Being at Manchester Science Park gives us more than a base - it connects us into a whole ecosystem. We’re alongside the NHS, universities and other medtech innovators, which means our ideas move faster, our products are stronger, and our impact is greater.”
Alistair Williamson, Managing Director, Lucid
Lucid continues to grow, expand its project portfolio and deepen collaborations with clinical partners. Bruntwood SciTech’s continued investment in Manchester’s innovation infrastructure means Lucid, and the wider community around them, will keep benefitting from a place designed to help science and technology businesses thrive.
