Bruntwood Prize

Cities aren’t structures, cities are people, and we look forward to the stories they can tell us

Bruntwood Prize-winning plays have been produced in the UK and abroad, with 24 productions appearing in 38 UK venues and as far afield as Australia, the USA and Canada since 2005.

About The Bruntwood Prize

The Bruntwood Prize is the biggest playwriting prize in Europe and offers the opportunity to writers of any background and experience to enter unperformed plays.

Established writers and those who may never have written a play are encouraged to submit scripts through an anonymous judging process, which means that each entry is judged on its own merit. Successful scripts are then developed for the stage in association with the Royal Exchange Theatre’s creative team.

About the partnership

As a company, we’re committed to encouraging and promoting a wide range of cultural activity, making sure it is accessible to everyone and stimulating creativity, conversation and social consciousness. We’re proud to continue to help nurture some of this country’s most exciting talent through The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting.

Run in collaboration with the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, the biennial competition was launched in 2005 and has awarded more than £250,000 in prize money to 28 writers. The playwriting prize can be a springboard to a writing career and previous winners include some of the UK’s most respected playwrights.
